Packing Tips for First Time Homebuyers

Pack as much or as little as you want. Martin Moving & Storage Co. is willing to do the whole job, or part of the packing. We want to make sure you move goes as smoothly as possible. If you do plan on packing your items, here are some tips to help you below:

Preparations:

  • Pack the items you don't use often first.
  • Start the packing process as soon as you find out you are moving - don't wait till the last minute.
  • Never pack items that may be flammable.
  • Make sure you have packing paper or other packing materials to line the box with. This will protect your valuables.
  • List contents on the outside of each box as you pack. It's helpful to write on many sides of the box.
  • Write "Fragile" on the outside of the boxes that carry delicate items.
  • Separate non-breakables and breakables
  • Pack all cartons tightly.
  • Use professional tape - don't use masking tape or other types of tape. Most non moving tapes won't hold your items tightly in the box. (We offer all moving materials)
  • Don't over pack boxes - the bottoms may give out.

Packing Tips for Fine China:

 - Best to wrap each china item with clean newspaper. Wrap each one individually, then wrap a few together in a pair. Place these bundles in the box and add additional newspaper to protect the items. Pack heaviest items on the bottom.

Packing Tips for Soft Goods:

 - Soft goods like pillows and blankets are packed in lined cartons separated by layers of clean paper.

Packing Tips for Shoes:

 - If possible, place all shoes back in their original shoe box. If you do not have the boxes, you can individually wrap them to protect them.

Packing Tips for Clothes:

 - We have special wardrobe cartons for items that are hung.

Packing Tips for Stereos and Other Electronics:

 - If possible, pack electronics in original cartons. Use plenty of bubble wrap and make sure the box you are using is firmly packed and sealed. Pad all parts of the box inside.

Packing Tips for Books:

 - They lay flat in a carton, alternating the spine and open side of book.

Packing Tips for Mirrors and Glass:

 - Wrap in a generous cushion of clean paper first. Place in flat packing carton. Tape and seal the carton - if possible add additional padding.

Packing Tips for Computers:

 - If possible, pack all computers in original containers. As long as proper packing materials are used when packing, your computer can be packed and moved without problems. Make sure you label this "fragile - Computer"
